Smart zeolite fertilizers effectively dose nutrition for all types of plants

06 December 2017

Zeolite fertilizers are fertilizers with gradual release of nutrients. These fertilizers contain an active mineral zeolite – clinoptilolite which binds water and nutrients in its internal structure and enables their gradual release into the soil at a slower rate and a more efficient utilization of both elements by the vegetation system.

Effective use of nitrogen

Nitrogen contained in industrial fertilizers is often applied in the form of ammonia nitrogen (NH4+) which is released at a fast rate and is highly effective, and therefore easily taken by plants. At the same time, on the other hand, it tends to flow into ground waters or escape into the atmosphere (nitrification), which reduces its usability. This occurs mainly in areas with higher rainfall and light soils. Numerous studies have shown that the usability of the supplied nitrogen is reduced to 1/3 of the total supplied volume.

Benefits of zeolite combined with industrial fertilizers

The combination of industrial fertilizers with zeolite enables the binding of free ammonia nitrogen to the internal structure of zeolite, thus preventing the losses of nitrogen caused by its release into ground waters or by nitrification, which helps to maintain nitrogen in a form allowing its efficient intake via the root system for a longer time. The binding capacity of zeolite is best when combined with solid industrial fertilizers, applied liquid organic fertilizers (slurry, digestate, liquid digestate), as well as inorganic nitrogen fertilizers (DAM 390, SAM 240), i.e. fertilizers containing mainly ammonia nitrogen. The usability of NH4+ nitrogen supplied to fertilizers mixed with zeolite is higher by 28% compared to traditional industrial fertilizers. Beside nitrogen, zeolite is capable of binding other mineral macro- and microelements, such as potassium, phosphorus, or sulphur which belong the nutrition elements promoting the volume and quality of the harvest.

Specific applications in agriculture and gardening

Zeolite fertilizers are suitable for growing agricultural crops, vegetables – sowing and planting of seedlings and potatoes, planting and fertilization of fruit seedlings and trees. The entire dose of fertilizer is to be supplied during sowing or planting, alternatively during the first spring fertilization which is due to the fact that the active mineral - clinoptilolite – contained in the zeolite fertilizer absorbs nutrients from the fertilizer into its crystal grid and the nutrients are then gradually released into the soil. Gradual release of nutrients guarantees a sufficient supply of nutrients for plants throughout the entire vegetation period with a reduced necessity to use additional fertilizers. Regular supply of nutrients facilitates a consistent growth of vegetation, its healthy condition and increased resistance to fungal diseases, which is an excellent precondition in order to boost agricultural production at high quality levels.  Losses of nutrients caused by their release or failed intake are minimized, as well as the content of nitrogen in the production. Furthermore, zeolite fertilizers contribute to environmental protection.
